Emergency Roof Repair
Soon enough the winds will start howling. Snow will splatter your windows like shards of glass. The walls will creak from the cold. With multiple feet of snow piled on and around your house, the last thing you need a leak in your roof.
But it could happen. Leaks, holes and cave-ins are a serious problem that deserve immediate attention, so be sure to put a call into a roofing expert immediately!
In the meantime, or if a roofing crew cannot address the problem right away, you might need to do a little patching to stop leaking and prevent further, more catastrophic damage from occurring.
For emergency roof repair, or to patch a smaller area in your roof, first cut a piece of sheet metal or roof flashing no less than six inches larger than the hold or area that is leaking. Next slip the edge of the sheet metal under the shingles above the leak. Hammer the temporary patch into place with a piece of scrap wood held against the edge.
If the patch needs to be larger, fold a sheet of plastic in half and use a staple gun to fasten the plastic to the roof over the leak. Run a bead of silicone caulk around the edges.
Keep in mind that while keeping moisture out and away from the leak is important, an act of equal importance is to remove the standing water and sop up any moisture you find in and around your home as a result of the leak. In the attic, on boards, and even soaking into your living space, make sure all the moisture is gone to avoid rotting and thus weakening of other load-bearing structures to your home.
